Practical Sailor
A Look at Sails:
The Problem
The existing head sail, a 165% genoa that come with Constance is old. While the stitching is holding up compared to the cloth, the cloth itself is deteriorating, particularly in the leech. The sail tore at the spreaders in August 2017 and tore again when removing the sail from the boat in November 2018. Time to replace this sail.
The genoa from Interrupt is too long in the luff (see otes from 2018-08-07). Need to try relocating the block the top of the mast to see if its possible to gain some additional hoist. In September 2018, tried to remove the bottommost toggle from below the Selden furler, but was not successful. Seems that the backstay is too short to allow me to remove the link.
The Plan
- Make the genoa from Interrupt fit by relocating the jib block at the top of the mast to gain a longer hoist. If this does not work fit, then recut the sail.
- Obtain a 135%LP genoa.
Use Case
- The boat is an Alberg 30.
- Sail is for stronger wind days on the Chesapeake Bay, blowing 15 knots or more.
- Light wind days, plan to use an existing genoa with 165%LP.
- As the wind rises, the helm starts to load, seems that a single reef in the main works well. Once the combination of full genoa single reef is played out, plan to switch to the smaller genoa for which I wish to purchase this winter for the upcoming season.
- Season starts in April.
- The sail is to be used both cruising and one-design racing.
- Most often, I sail singlehand the boat during the day.
- Sailing into the evening is common, occassionally into the night.
- Boat is sailed between 45 and 65 times a year. No joke; checked the logs to get these numbers.

Questions
- Is the plan listed above for reefing and switching sails appropriate?
- What changes to the plan would you recommend?
- What is the appropriate wind range for the sail?
- What material and weight of cloth in the sail?
- What style of construction (cross cut, mitre cut, radial cut, other)?
- Should be sail be used reefed, as well as fully deployed?
- If reefable, to what extent, how much to roll in?
- If reefable, is the max amount to be rolled onto the furler marked on the foot (and leech?) of the sail?
-
- What other questions should I ask?
