Started track after raising main. Ended track upon flaking the main. The wind softened so much towards the end that Constance was making 4 knots or less downwind. Too little after the upwind legs of 14 to 17 knots at the masthead.
Reefed the main in the river near the mouth as the boat was a bit loaded up. Definately the right move. Did not seem to lose much, if any, speed. Perhaps sailed higher due to less leeway? Needs verification. The funniness in the track at the first tack in the river is where the jib got hung up on the port spreader. The spreader boot is ripped. Damaged the sail. Must replace the spreader boot and sail tape the jib before the next sail. Excellent tacking angles in the Bay. In those areas of the Bay where then waves where less developed, such to leeward of Thomas Point Shoal or in the bay between Tolly Point and Thomas Point, Constance would sail at 5 to 6 knots. Out in the developed waves, the speed was cut to lower 4 knots, even high 3 knots after particularly large waves or a particularly bothersome set of waves.
Sailed to Thomas Point Shoal Light and then headed back. Slow downwind. The hitch in the track is where the boat was set with main sheeted in hard and jib furled while I handled a few tasks. The second hitch is where I shook out the reef. Again the main sheeted in hard and jib furled, then let the main out so that I could raise the sail fully. The reefing system works. Would be nice if there was a way to keep the hanks on the track while reefed, even with the tack reef cringle at the boom.
