Departed Yacht Haven Annapolis and decided upon full genoa and a single reef in the main. Set the reef. While attending to deploying and trimming the genoa, the main was luffing, flogging even, much looser than it should be. Quickly trimmed in the main to full trim, a bit tight. Dealt with the genoa a bit more. Then noticed that the end cap had come off the boom. The boom was being held by the bolt rope in the foot of the sail, and the outhaul connected to the boom and the top of the end cap. The end cap was suspended in mid-air by the topping lift and the sheet.
After a moment's surprise, decided to sail anyway on genoa alone. Lowered the main. Did a rather quick and somewhat messy furl. Placed the boom over the end of the companionway, cushioned by a boat cushion on each side. Looped one handle of each boat cushion, port and starboard, twice over a cabin top winch to secure the cushions and ensure that the boom and sail would not be damaged by rubbing against the companionway track.
Sailed a close reach, broadening at the very end, out to the furthest of eight cargo vessels anchoring in the bay. As far south as the latitude of Thomas light. Among the vessels were Ultra Panther, Mykonos Wave, Chancy, and Golden Zhoushan. Close reach to the NNE after tacking behind Chancy, to pass ahead, eastward, of Golden Zhoushan. Broad reach back to dock.
