- Removed the two stiles from either side of the companionway. The screws were covered with about 1/8" of epoxy then a bung was shoved into the hole against the epoxy. Quite a bother to remove. After removing the wooden bung, the epoxy prevented any access to the screw. Finally worked out that using the side of a fast spinning drill bit could be used to "route out" the epoxy "bung". Took about two hours to remove the six bungs from each of the two stiles.
- Removed the threshold of the companionway. The threshold was secured with five screws, beneath bungs, bungs that were installed correctly and came out easily. No epoxy, perhaps a bit of wood glue. Expect that these were original. The underside of the threshold was bedded in some type of sealant that had dried out completely.
- Used Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202
to wash all the smooth areas which are to be sanded and painted.
- Next steps:
- Remove the access plate in the cockpit floor.
- Need to decide whether or not to remove the cockpit drains for this project.
