Installed oak fiddles on both starboard and port shelves of the v-berth. The oak is 2-1/2" wide, 4 foot long, and 1/4" thick pieces from Home Depot for less than six dollars each. Four are required. No scarfing tools, so the two pieces are butt jointed. Used a full length piece on each side forward. The aft piece is about two and a half feet long (75 or 76 centimeters). Fits snuggly. The fiddle extends 3 centimeters above the shelf and one centimeter below. The rest of the width is taken up by the shelf. The fiddles are fastened about 3/4" from the ends using #6 3/4" long oval head sheet metal screws and finishing washers. In addition to the fasteners at each end, added a fastener every foot (30 centimeters).
Covered the ends of the machine screws holding all four portlights in the salon with #10-24 cap nuts. The existing screws are too long. The cap nuts are in addition to the existing nylon lock nuts. Need to replace the plastic and use correct length machine screws, so that the cap nuts and lock wasters are the only fasteners.
Need to remove the fiddles, sand, and finish.
