Course: B3R
Time limit: 2020
Sails: Interrupt 170LP genoa and main. EP Sails spinnaker.
Pin-end downwind/crosswind start and made the mistake of starting with the spinnaker. Only Alberg to do so. At first it was a carry, but the wind shifted forward as we sailed down the river past "A" to the Bay. By the time that the apparent wind reached 70*, had to take it down. Slow, poor take down due to failing to collect the clew and foot under the boom, thus allowing the body of the spinnaker to get behind the boat. Fell far behind the fleet on this leg out to "E". Once we got the spinnaker down and the genoa deployed, made good time, good angle and good speed. Twice tried to pass Ronin to leeward and ended up in their gas. LinGin, Skybird, Laughing Gull rounded the "E" mark about ten boatlengths ahead.
Maintained course a "E" for just a bit to get above the line of the boats headed to "B". Tacked over and chased. Good speed and angle on the leg. Closed the distance some here.
Rounded "B" and set the chute again headed for Y"A", a mark of the course. Laughing Gull, with only Pat and Lisa Phinney aboard, was having some problems. Passed them near the start of this leg as they tried to sort the boat out. Reached Y"A" about even with Kawahai and rounded inside them, gybing spinnaker onto starboard tack. Difficult carry, very tight and upwindish, to N"8".
Rounded N"8" a boatlength+ ahead of Laughing Gull and some distance ahead of Kawahai. With Laughing Gull upwind of us, we were not able to hold off Laughing Gull. The two of the kept parallel and overlapped all the way to the finish. Laughing Gull, a few feet bow out, finished just before us. Same error in dropping the kite at the finish. Race committee did not call out finishers at the club...perhaps over radio only? Don't know, had turned the radio off by then.
Finishing order: LinGin, Skybird, Laughing Gull, Constance, Kawahai.
