Course: A1 Sails: Interrupt 170LP genoa and main. EP Sails spinnaker.

Light winds blowing NE to SW across the Severn at the start. Decently positioned but made the mistake of turning away from the start at two minutes to go. Should have continued directly to the pin. LinGin started before us as did White Cap. Both widened the gap as we sailed to the leg to the drop mark. Either they had better wind or we were off in our sail trim. Sails looked good but the results do not support that statement.

On the way out, the apparent wind got up as much as 8kts and the boat was going as much as 3.8kts @ 30* apparent and 4.5kts at 40* into about a quarter plus knots of current. These speed match well with the ORC Handy Guide table of polars.

Close hauled course gradually easing to a close reach from the start to the the drop mark. LinGin set a spinnaker after rounding the mark and was able to ride that sail to the finish. Seems that the wind died from the bay towards upstream leaving us in a flat calm. Set the spinnaker only to see the wind go forward of the beam. At no time did the spinnaker fill. Doused and rolled out the genoa only to see the wind go aft. Repeated that drill a second time.

The race committee canceled several fleets: J 105, Etchells, Harbor 20, Herreshoff 12.5, and ORC 2. Only those fleets that had one of more boats that had finished were scored: J 22, J 30, J 80, Alberg 30, ORC 1, and PHRF.

Good night of practice which was sorely needed. Many errors in setting up the spinnaker sheet and guy. Examples include: pole on the wrong side of the headstay, spinnaker halyard inside the jib sheets, guy wrapped around the jib sheet, guy wrapped around the genoa drum, etc.
