Wood Finishing
- Do NOT use tack rags. Tack rags contain wax and are not compatible with epoxy.
- Surface Preparation based upon Application Guide beginning on page 31
- Fill all cracks.
- Remove all of the previous finish.
- Sand smooth with 80-120 grit.
- Blow the surface clean with compressed air or vacuum or brush.
- Apply acetone and remove immediately using paper towels or rags changed frequently.
- Ensure surface is completely dry.
- Priming based upon Application Guide beginning on page 56
- Apply Awlwood MA Primer within one hour of degreasing.
- Apply Awlwood MA Primer with a brush to achieve timber saturation.
- Remove excess material by wiping with the grain using paper towels or rags changed frequently.
- If sanding is required due to grain lift or defect, hand sand lightly using 400 grit or ScotchPad#7447.
- Finishing based upon Application Guide beginning on page 58
- Apply the first coat of Awlwood MA Gloss 24 hours after applying the primer at a rate of 12-14 square meters per liter.
- Sand the first coat with 220-280 grit. After sanding, remove sanding dust by vacuuming then warm water wash only using lint free cloths until surface is completely clean.
- Apply the second coat of Awlwood MA Gloss 24 hours later at a rate of 12-14 square meters per liter.
- Sand the second coat with 220-280 grit. After sanding, remove sanding dust by vacuuming then warm water wash only using lint free cloths until surface is completely clean.
- Apply six more coats.
- Wait between coats till pressing with a finger does not leave an indented fingerprint.
- Applying multiple coats in a single day will reduce flow and levelling necessitating more sanding the following day.
- Good practice is to gently sand/scuff the surface at the start of each day to remove any texture, especially on vertical surfaces, and then multi-coat as above.
- Sand lightly with 280 grit if more than 24 hours passes between coats.
- Allow to cure for 24 hrs.
- Hand sand working up to P600 (CAMI400) grit paper, working with the grain.
- Remove all sanding dust.
- Reduce the final coat of Awlwood MA 10% by volume with Awlwood MA Brush Reducer.
- Apply the final coat. Once a non-running film is achieved allow Awlwood MA to cure and flow on its own.

- Surface Preparation (New Exterior/Interior Wood)
- Wipe the wood with Interlux Special Thinner 216
to remove any natural surface oils and contaminants.
- Once dry, sand surface with 180-220 grit sandpaper, always sand along the length of the grain.
- Remove all sanding dust by vacuuming the surface.
- Wipe the surface with Interlux Special Thinner 216 and allow to dry before applying Cetol products.
- Note: If the wood is exposed for more than 24 hours, clean the surface again with Interlux Special Thinner 216 in order to remove any surface contaminants.
- Application
- Apply the first coat.
- Wait 24 hours.
- Apply the second coat.
- Wait 24 hours.
- Apply the third coat.
- Note: Always allow 24 hours drying time between coats. It is not recommended to sand in between coats of Cetol on exterior wood. This will lower the overall layer thickness, which is very important for effective product performance. For a smoother finish, scuff the surface lightly with a nylon scuffing pad. If you sand between coats apply a fourth coat of Cetol to compensate for the reduced layer thickness.

- Wear Record
- Surface Preparation
- Old Gel-Coat: Scrub old gel-coat with a stiff scotch pad or stainless wire brush and a good degreasing soap to remove oxidation, dirt and oil. A de-waxing agent is required if the surface has been waxed within 5 years.
- Fresh Polyester or Epoxy Fiberglass: If the polyester includes wax, this must be completely washed away with a de-waxing agent. Then sand well with 60 - 100 grit paper. Wash well with degreasing soap and water.
- Masking
- Linear polyurethanes require 3 days cure time prior to applying masking tape
- After masking, sand the fresh topcoat with 60 to 180 grit.
- Take care to sand right up to the masking tape.
- Application
- Apply at a rate of about one liter (quart) per 2 square meters (20 square feet.)
- Apply a thick coating using a large brush or notched trowel.
- Cockpit seats: 1/8th inch teeth yields a thin, fine finish, much like sand filled topcoats.
- Cockpit floor and decks: 1/4 inch teeth yield a thick coating with taller peaks and deeper valleys.
- With your KiwiGrip roller, evenly distribute the spread KiwiGrip over the area.
- Lightly roll back and forth over the surface in any direction (or multiple directions) to even out the texture.
- Finish the section with a few passes of your roller using a very light pressure to pop any bubbles that may have formed.
- Remove the masking tape and quickly move on to the next section.
- Curing
- You can walk on your new decks without shoes the next day.
- KiwiGrip will be tough but slightly rubbery in less than 48 hours, and will reach final hardness over time.
- After full cure (a few days) scrub your new decks with fresh water to remove a soap-like component that migrates to the surface during KiwiGrip’s cure.
- The bond strength continues to mature over a week or so.
