- Surprise #426: 150' of 5/16" BBB chain under the windlass, 200' of 5/8" nylon through the deck pipe to port
On Facebook, Gordon Laco wrote answered the question "What type and size of anchor do you use for your A30?" with the statement "7.5kg Bruce and 200' of 5/16" BBB chain. I thought the anchor might have been light so also carry a 13lb Danforth and a 25lb AP (like Popeye has tatooed on his arm) But... that little Bruce anchor has never dragged whatever the bottom. Most recent test was in the 30kts of wind with quite a chop last Saturday night during the 2nd Misery Trip of 2019. I kept watch all night while the wind screamed and poor Surprise yanked and bobbed at her gear, but we didn't move an inch despite shortish scope. That Bruce replaced the 25lb CQR we used to carry on the bow roller and which used to drag all the time."
Mike Meinhold's Rinn Duin uses a 30# Bruce anchor, 30 feet of 5/16ths, and 200' of 5/8" rode. Mike reports that he has used this combination successful in near-hurricane conditions of 60kts of wind.
