- LCWO is a excellent resource for learning Morse code. Highly recommended.
- Its about learning the rhythm of each symbol, NOT about could the elements and their type or visualizing the elements.
- Need to warm up before attempting to copy code.
- Have to wait for the character to complete before "guessing" at it. Fear of missing out on the next character is an element here.
- After some period of time, fatigue sets in and further practice is quite frustrating.
- Must fight the tendency to stop and try not to miss a single character. In doing so, its easy to miss another one or two.
- Must accept the idea that trying not to miss a single character when the character does not come to mind immediately is worse than letting that single character go. Very hard given my drive to get 100% on every "test".
- Must learn each character to the level of automatic response before adding another character. Does not seem that I can add a second new character till all previous are automatic. There is not enough time to think about the character. This is evident in the difficulties that I am having with "flzyp=".
- Introducing a new symbol creates from confusion and hesitancy when listening to other symbols already learned. Not all symbols, but rather those that are in some way close the new symbol. Closeness could be number of elements, initial sound, final sound, or other characteristic.
- Had a difficult time with the letter "f". Caused me to drop the speed from 20/7 to 20/5. Trying to recover back to 20/7 is quite challenging, as is 20/6.
- Using "Code Groups" at LCWO customized to include only those symbols causing difficulty is quite useful. In my case, "uflzyp=" needed additional work.
- Once the new symbol has been "learned" or at least is no longer "surprising", the rate at which code is being sent appears to slow down. Working at 20/5, the time between symbols feels quite long once the new symbol has been "learned".
- Customized "Code Groups" at LCWO become essential once one has completed about one-third of the lessons, as each new symbol occurs less and less frequently during the "Practice Text" of each lesson.
- Starting using Morse to force myself to recognize the characters faster. Morse is based upon A Fully Automatic Morse Code Teaching Machine based upon sound recognition and postponed discrimination.
- Troubles at LCWO lesson 23, average accuracy dropped to 86% despite 25 minutes of practice. Problem seems to be decoding the four element characters and thinking/visualizing the pattern.
- Decided to try code groups limited to few letters at 20/10wpm.
- 2017-12-06: Starting with only "f" and "l". Got accuracies of 96.7, 95, 98.4, 100 and 100% over five minutes at 20/10wpm.
- 2017-12-06: Practicing "f", "l", and "y". Got accuracies of 98.2, 94.6, 96.4, 100 and 98.2% over five minutes at 20/10wpm. Fatiguing. Mind starting to wonder while copying.
- 2017-12-06: Practicing "=" and "/" alone at 20/10wpm. Two runs of one minute. 100% each time.
- 2017-12-06: Practicing "fly=" together at 20/10wpm. Five one minute runs: 89.1, 85.5, 92.8, 98.2, and 100%.
- Progress has slowed notably since the addition of "5" and "H". The problem is recognizing the number of dits. A one minute section may have eight errors of which half are often hearing "s" in place of "h" and "h" in place of "5". Sometimes an additional dit is heard rather than being short a dit. Being "short a dit" also expresses itself as hearing "j" in place of "3". Seems The Trouble with Dits is not mine alone.
- 2018-01-19: Completed the forty lessons. Still having trouble with the number of dits. Its not uncommon that I mistake the number of dits by one five or six times in a one minute random character practice session.
- Started listening to and trying to head copy ARRL code practice files at 7.5WPM. Very hard. The symbols are slow enough that many of them shound nothing like the symbols at 20WPM that I have been using for training. The shortest symbols are recognized quickly. Its the longer ones that I have to decode by counting, I am sorry to say.
- 2018-02-16: Have reached the point of between 3 to 9 errors at 20/7wpm. Of these errors about half are misidentifying dit heavy characters, such as B in place of 6 and V in place of 4. Effective speed is reported by LCWO.net as about 9wpm. Time to move to 20/8wpm. Listening to W1AW code practice this morning, 5wpm was very easy. 7.5wpm was fine. Albe to copy a decent amount of 10wpm, far from perfect, say 60%. Progress after having completed 972 one minute sessions on LCWO.net and 21,000 characters in the MorseMachine.
- 2018-03-12: Troubles with dits continue. Today changed the settings from 20/8 to 20/9 after completing some 1,100 one minute five random character drills. The last day at 20/8 showed an average or 80% with about half the errors being dits. Still, the code was starting to feel slow, too comfortable. Still there are times during the one minute drill that I stop processing and allow a couple or three characters to pass by without decoding them or in typing the numbers or '=' I let a character slide by me. Fatigue also plays a role in this. Before each set of one minute drills, I use the Morse Machine for about 100 characters to warm up.
- 2018-03-14: Started using Morse Runner set at 5 minutes of up to 10wpm, single calls, no interference or other problems. So hard to copy characters sent at that rate after listening to characters sent at 20wpm since 2017-10-31. Took several tries to be able to start copying call signs. Took reading notes on how to use Morse Runner and watching a video to get the hang of it. After four or more tries got the QSO raate up to 60 per hour for the five minute period. Next is to extend the period to 10 minutes and perhaps to increase the speed above 10wpm given that many of the calls appear at quite modest speeds.
- 2018-03-18 Using Morse Runner at 12wpm. Completed 12 contacts of which one was a duplicate. No "NIL" contacts. Getting much easier. The range of audible frequencies and speed is good ptractice. Seems that I am no longer locked into one speed at one audio tone. Need to turn of the speed.
- 2018-03-20 Using Morse Runner at 14wpm, 12 contacts, 144 points. All contacts valid. Copied the 10wpm 2013-12-24 text from the ARRL 10wpm code practice archive. Lots of errors, but lots of correct words as well. Plenty of progress since learning all the symbols two months ago on 2018-01-19 at 20/6wpm. Accepted to the April/May session of the CW Academy. Classes to start 4/17.
- 2018-03-21 2013-12-11 text from the ARRL 10wpm code practice archive. Morse Runner at 14wpm, 13 contacts, 169 points, all contacts valid.
- 2018-03-22 Lots of Morse Runner today. Want a new personal record. Got it. Morse Runner at 14wpm, 15, 225 points, all contact valid.
- 2018-03-25 Feeling a bit fed up with doing the lessons at 20/9 on LCWO.net. Need to make this fun again. Did about 200 chaaracters of Morse Machine at LCWO.net. Reached 7.2wpm using the Morse Machine, a record for me. Copied the 2013-11-25 text from the ARRL 10wpm code practice archive. Morse Runner thrice, once at 14wpm and twice at 15wpm. At 15wpm, missed one compound call completely, otherwise completed 14 exchanges, one duplicate prefix, yielding 182 points.
- 2018-03-27 Morse Runner score 256. Stopped from getting more due to flubbing a compound call "JA6UE/J". During ARRL 10wpm, started to head copy some words. The processing inherent in that messed up my copy to the screen. Strange step in learning. In the evening, Morse Runner score 324, 18 contacts, 18 prefixes, missed 19 by less than 10 seconds.
- 2018-04-12 Have been copying from the ARRL 10wpm code practice archive. Started with the last item on the page, working up the page, have now reached 2013-05-01. Have begun to headcopy to some extent. Its interfering with plain copying of the code practice sessions. Quite fustrating to have additional progress impede that which I have achieved already.
- 2018-04-24 Finished all the 2013 10 wpm ARRL code archive recordings. Started on the 13 wpm recordings. Significantly harder. Getting some full words, several in a row at times. At other places missing a good bit. Examples: "once in a lifetime opportunity, sain arrl aeting anagr bob ierbitzen, nq," and "plan on some vry special nn them activities" should have been "once in a lifetime
opportunity, said ARRL marketing manager Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R," and "plan on some very special centennial themed activities". The first recording, from 2013-12-24, is 14 minutes long; broke it into two section over two days. Seven minutes at 13 wpm is tiring enough.
- 2018-04-29 In four sessions, copied the last two 13 wpm recordings of 2013, half a recording each session. Tough. Some words are appearing, particularly "the", "radio", "was" and such. At other times, I have no idea what I am copying, just hurrying to type as the letters seem to tumble out too fast to think about them. On 2018-04-29, copied the 2018-03-28 10 wpm recording to make sure that I was not losing what copying ability I had obtained. Copied correctly 47 out of 58 words, so I have not forgotten how to copy 10 wpm. By way of comparision, on 2018-04-22, copied 57 out of 69 words correctly from the 2013-01-23 recording at 10 wpm. Both just over 80% of the words correct.
- 2018-05-01 Switched to iambic B keying. Its easier to send a 'c' now. 'L' also seems easier, though I don't know why. Today's section at 13wpm seemed easier, or at least less paniced. The results were terrible with errors in nearly every word, but at least it felt better.
- 2018-05-11 10 wpm ARRL recorded files are starting to get a bit boring. Need to move the 13 wpm files.
- 2018-05-16 Practicing sending. Dennis k2xs, our CW Academy lead, reported on Monday, 2018-05-14, that my copying is fine, gotta improve the sending. Have been working for about 30 minutes at a time. Twice on Tuesday, once today so far. Practicing: "fear", "feel", "fill", "fleet", "floor", "fuel", "luff", "fluffy", "freaky franky fears freddy", "fluffy luffs fearfully", "furl from the luff", "Flank steak feels like flubber said the flunkie ", "Don Quixote habitually lost his way", "Zapped in the zebra zone by lonely lovelies bearing baskets of fresh fruit"
- 2018-06-07 Successfully complete CW Academy Level One on Thursday, June 7th.
- 2018-06-12 More practice at 13 wpm. 10 wpm now seems slow. Just completed the 2018-01-03 recording. Missed two 'h'es which I transcribed as 's'es. Dropped two letters, a 'b' and an 'f'. No other errors. 13 wpm still seems fast, but there are words that appear quite simple, 'is', 'and', 'the', and the 'th' dipthong. Making some progress.
- 2018-06-21 Not happy with my progress at 13 wpm. Note that I have been having trouble making time to practice each day, but still not happy. Started doing LCWO Word Training to get my speed up. After six attempts believe that its already starting to make a difference.
- 2018-07-22 Continuing to practice. 13 wpm is getting easy, so long as I dont try to do any head copy. Some words auto-decode, examples include "some", "and", "the", "that".
- 2018-10-31 Been copying half (7.5 minutes) or full recordings from the 13wpm code practice archive. Started on 2018-06-07 and have completed 45 recordings. Been doing Morse Runner set to 18wpm and able to get 18qsos in 10 minutes. Not more. Not satisfied with my progress. Have not been able to copy a full minute without errors. Went back to LCWO code groups and found the 20/9wpm setting extremely difficult. Having not heard 20wpm character spacing for a while, it find it near impossible to copy. Back to the LCWO Morse Machine at 20wpm character speed. Did some 500 characters. Noticeable improvement over the course of the session. Need to do this everyday for a while. Get my ear and recognition back up to speed.
- 2019-03-01 Completed CW Academy Level Two course.
-
- On Break. Rather burned out at the end of CW Academy Level Two.
-
- 2019-11-01 Started again with CW on Sunday past, 201-10-27, after competing in the CQ WW SSB contest. Spent the week doing two sessions of Morse each day. By the end second session on Friday, 2019-11-01, made it up to the letter "C" in 15 minutes of copying. Morse does not indicate the speed at which individual characters are sounded, estimating 20wpm for each character. Faster than I was used to before. The higher speed makes it a bit easier, I think, to distinguish '6' from 'B', in that '6' sounds like a LOT of dits, whereas 'B' sounds like a reasonable number.
- Level 1 during April-May 2018
- Level 2 during January-February 2019
- Level 3 TBD

Recommendations from Potomac Valley Radio Club Members
I’ve been coaching Level I CW Academy for several years. CW ops encourages beginning students to use paddles/keyers but doesn’t mandate it. Everything in the class design aims at enabling the student to become proficient at higher speeds as quickly as possible. Learning keyer brain muscle coordination and muscle memory from the beginning generally allows a graduating student to better send CW at a better clip. The class also sends the characters from the beginning at 20WPM but with slower Farnsworth spacing between characters. Each character is taught by sound rather than counting dits and dahs. Head copy is also taught.
It’s great that you are encouraging your neighbor who is participating in our great hobby and helping him learn the ropes with CW. If he’s interested, I’d be happy to let him know about the CW Academy.

It’s seems the opinion on this varies from whom you ask based on their experience. I would say it’s better to learn how to COPY well first before sending. I could only afford a straight key when I was a kid and thrilled when I was loaned a monster sized Heathkit HD-1410 key/keyer combo. The end result is I could never break the bad habits learned to become an iambic key op and have found, thanks to W0VTT, perfect harmony with a single lever key.
Good luck with the new op and hopefully future PVRCer.

My advice on the subject is purely anecdotal, based on my own experience, but FWIW....
Starting out at slow speed, the straight key might be the instrument of choice, but I would recommend switching over to some sort of keyer fairly early on. The straight key seems to come naturally for most people. In my case, back when I took the 13 wpm, I had to demonstrate sending ability to the FCC examiner. I spent a lot of time copying code before going in for the test, but don't remember practicing or having any worries about the sending part. (By the time I took the 20 wpm, FCC had done away with sending tests.) But I stuck with the straight key way too long before I started using a keyer and now, 40+ years later, my mastery of the keyer is wanting. Especially since the bulk of my CW operation nowadays is either contest operation, where almost all the sending is done by N1MM in ESM mode, or DXing, where short QSOs are taken care of by a few button pushes on the memory keyer.
So, based on my own experience, I would advise your friend to make his first on the air forays with a straight key, but also to start experimenting very early on with the keyer in its various modes (iambic, "bug mode", etc.) and not waste too much time in migrating to his "speed key" of choice.

I used a J-38 straight key for a limited time until I was very proficient sending with it. Then I graduated to a mechanical 'Bug' which I used for five years.
Following this, I went to single paddle automatic keying which I have used to this day.
I believe the time spent with the straight key was well spent. However, once your copying speed becomes greater than you can comfortably send with a straight key you should abandon it in favor of automatic keying.
Here is where you have to make a choice: single or double paddles. In the event iambic keying becomes a problem then go with the simpler single paddle.

I’d start him on a paddle (dual lever) and encourage him to also be able to use a straight key as a back-up. These days it’s unlikely that he’ll find himself in a situation where the only key in a shack he visits is a straight key, but you never know.
The reason I recommend a dual lever paddle is that he will find that it is the type of paddle most common in shacks, and if he can only operate with a single lever paddle, he will have a terrible time later on trying to send with a dual lever paddle. And I’m not referring to squeeze keying (I don’t use that), but the fact that it takes time to train your hand to press only one lever at a time. I know this from personal experience, and spent a solid month making such an adjustment in my own shack when I changed from a single lever to dual lever paddle.

I'd say the newbie should learn to hand send at first.
There are several amusing CW instructional movies on YouTube. WWII vintage Navy, and post war Army. It shows hand position for the sender. While very corny, it's all true. You might give instruction on the dit to dot ratio and inter-character and inter-word spacing. That's shown in the Army video. The Army video is clearly not PC.
The Army video also introduces the phonetic alphabet.
As for faster sending: I was advised by my Elmer to learn a keyer, rather than a bug. I learned on a Heathkit non-Iambic keyer. I cannot send well with an Iambic keyer. I suppose someone can learn it, and many may love it. I wonder what happened to all those Autek keyers and non-squeeze paddles from W3AU.
There must be a technique for learning squeeze keying correctly. I find that my timing is off and I'm often sending incorrectly with extra dits inserted. I've gone thru many a contest without ever touching a key, I just switch to keyboard mode or have F keys set up with queries for the particular contest.
I often wonder if switching to squeeze keying is like learning to fly the Osprey if one's a fixed wing pilot. I believe the Marines train Osprey pilots on Osprey only and therefore they don't need to unlearn fixed wing behavior.
