Mainsail Controls

Mainsheet

Controls tension of the main leech which affects twist. (WIOD)

Main Halyard

Easing affects the top of the sail by increasing twist (leech open) and flattening the sail. (WIOD)
Tightening affects the top of the sail by decreasing twist (leech closed) and deepening the camber. (WIOD)

Cunnningham

Primarily for draft control. (WIOD)
Easing allow the draft to move aft. (WIOD)
Tightening brings the draft forward and increases twist (leech open) at the top of the sail (WIOD)

Outhaul

Easing affects the bottom of the sail by decreasing twist (leech closed) and deepening the bottom of the mainsail. (WIOD)
Tightening affects the bottom of the sail by increasing twist (leech open) and flattening the bottom of the mainsail. (WIOD)

Vang

Primarily to control the leech of the main. (WIOD)
Easing opens the leech of the main. (WIOD)
Tightening tightens (closes) the leech of the main. (WIOD)

Traveler

Rotates the main as a whole. (WIOD)
Easing depowers the sail. (WIOD)
Tightening increases power of the sail. (WIOD)

Backstay

Jib Controls

Jib Halyard

Easing affects the top of the sail by increasing twist (leech open) and flattening the sail. (WIOD)
Tightening affects the top of the sail by decreasing twist (leech closed) and deepening the camber. (WIOD)

Jib lead

Controls the general shape of the jib. (WIOD)
Forward tightens and closes the leech and makes the foot deeper. (WIOD)
Aft loosens and opens the leech and makes the foot flatter. (WIOD)

Jibsheet

Tension controls the degree to which the shape set by the jib lead is altered. (WIOD)

Spinnaker Controls

Spinnaker Halyard

Pulled right to the top keeps the kite from swinging. (WIOD)

Sheet lead

Controls the general shape of the spinnaker. (WIOD)
Forward tightens and closes the leech and makes the foot deeper. (WIOD)
Aft loosens and opens the leech and makes the foot flatter. (WIOD)
Forward -> Outhaul ease; Aft -> Outhaul tightening. (WIOD)

Topping lift

Controls luff tension, overall shape, and the leech. (WIOD)
Raising (easing) the tack opens the luff, flattens the kite, and tightens the leech. (WIOD)
Lowering (tightening) the tack closes the luff, deepens the kite, and opens the leech. (WIOD)
