Packing the Spinnaker

  1. Place the spinnaker bag/turtle on portside settee in the cabin with the long sides running fore-n-aft.
  2. Place the spinnaker on top of the spinnaker bag/turtle the portside settee in the cabin.
  3. Hang the head of the spinnaker, with the red edge tape aft, on the portside handrail by placing the steel ring in the head into the large "carabiner" hanging from the portside handrail.
  4. Disconnect the sheet and the guy from the two clews, if not already disconnected, and connect the sheet and guy to each other.
  5. Pass the sheet/guy combination to a crewmember on deck.
  6. Move all of the port leech (red tape) of the spinnaker to the aft end of the settee. Start at the head and slide your hand along the edge, push the cloth aft and repeat till you reach the clew.
  7. Move all of the starboard leech (blue tape) of the spinnaker to the forward end of the settee. Start at the head and slide your hand along the edge, push the cloth forward and repeat till you reach the clew.
  8. Ensure that the foot of the sail is not tangled by running your hand along the foot (white tape) of the spinnaker from one clew to the other. Place the cloth immediately in front of your feet.
  9. At this point, the three edges of the spinnaker should be separated, lying in mounds aft, forward and at your feet, without any twists.
  10. Push the body of the spinnaker into the bag/turtle.
  11. Place the foot (white tape) of the spinnaker in the bag/turtle along the side of the bag/turtle closest to you.
  12. Place the aft leech (red tape) of the spinnaker in the bag/turtle along the aft edge of the bag/turtle.
  13. Place the aft leech (blue tape) Bf the spinnaker in the bag/turtle along the forward edge of the bag/turtle.
  14. Pull the aft (red) clew from the bag/turtle while using your other hand to guide the leech and foot to lie alongside each other by spreading your arms full width side to side. Repeat so that two arm spans of leech and foot have been aligned. Accordion the aligned section into the aft end of the bag/turtle with the clew going in last.
  15. Insert the velcro strap through the clew ring and secure the clew to the bag/turtle.
  16. Repeat the prior two steps for the forward leech and foot, and secure the forward clew to the bag/turtle.
  17. Remove the head from the "carabiner", accordion the head of the spinnaker into the bag/turtle. Use the center velcro strap to secure the head to the bag/turtle.
