Setting the Spinnaker

  1. Ask the skipper on which side of the boat the bag/turtle or the pole should be set. The pole and bag/turtle are always on opposite sides.
  2. Connect the two together and to the forward lowers on the same sides as the bag/turtle.
  3. Run the port and starboard spinnaker sheets outside of all other lines and draped over the lifelines inside the bow pulpit.
  4. Pass the tails of the sheet and guy through the spinnaker ratcheting turning blocks making sure that the ratchet assists in bring the line in and opposes letting the line out.
  5. Connec the topping lift and the downhaul to the spinnaker pole making sure that the bridles are led fair and will not twist or flip the pole upside down.
  6. Bring the bag/turtle up from below and secure the bag/turtle to the lifelines.
  7. Connect the sheet to the aft clew of the spinnaker making sure that both the sheet and the guy pass on the same side of the lifelines.
  8. Connect the guy to the forward clew of the spinnaker making sure that both the sheet and the guy pass on the same side of the lifelines.
  9. Place the spinnaker pole on the same side of the deck as the guy with the forward end protruding over the edge of the deck, resting in the "V" formed by the lifeline and the bow pulpit.
  10. Place the guy in the forward jaw of the spinnaker pole.
  11. When cleared to do so by the skipper, connect the spinnaker halyard making sure that halyard passes outside the jib and the jibsheet and on the same side of the lifelines as the sheet and guy.
  12. When instructed to raise the pole or pole up, lift the spinnaker pole from the deck while the crew takes up slack in the topping lift and slackens the downhaul.
  13. Attach the aft jaw to the ring on the mast.
  14. When instructed to prefeed the guy, open the front half of the bag/turtle and help guide the sail forward to the end of the spinnaker pole while the crew takes up on the guy.
  15. Once around the mark, pole back will be the call for the crew to haul on the guy and bring the pole square to the apparent wind.
  16. When instructed to hoist, haul on the halyard to raise the spinnaker while the crew takes up slack in the spinnaker halyard.
  17. Immediately after the hoist, the crew will tend the sheet to spread the foot of the spinnaker which should inflate and fly immediately.
  18. When instructed, remove the bag/turtle from the lifelines and toss the bag/turtle below.
