There are two tillerheads aboard Constance, the one that came with the boat and one that was purchased at Anchor & Oars in Graysonville. The original was broken on Saturday of the 2021 NOOD. The tillerhead of the original tiller consists of two tangs that bracket the rudderhead and forward of the tangs an inverted-U shape, an N if you like, that cradles the tiller shaft. One side of the inverted-U is bent inward from top to bottom thereby requiring that any shaft either be shimmed or trimmed to match the non-parallel side. The two tangs do not fit the rudderhead well and require several washers to reduce the amount of wobble.
The second tiller head is a bit bent. It is a H-shape with two tangs, one on each side of the rudderhead, and two more forward, one on each side of the tiller shaft. The tangs are parallel to each other but the forward tangs are a bit bent to the side vis-a-vis the crossbar between the forward and rear tangs. The gap is about 1-15/16" wide.
The replacement tiller, a RudderCraft Model G , ordered from Defender , is too narrow for the second tillerhead and too wide for the original tiller head. Shimmed the tiller shaft with a custom trimmed piece of epoxy coated 1/4" thick red oak and a single bronze washer.
