Course: A2
Sails: EP Sails 169LPgenoa and Interrupt main with single reef. EP Sails spinnaker.

First time Mike Meinhold, with Woody aboard Rinn Duin, came out to race this season. The topsides, but for the transom, have been painted blue. Suspect that the bottom was redone, as Rinn Duin was sailing markedly better than I remember.

Mike Nikolich and Debbie were alone on Skybird. Quite the challenge for the two of them to double-hand the boat.

Started late, about 30 to 45 seconds late, due to turning back to the line a bit late and a genoa sheet fouling on the mast. Rinn Duin ahead by some ten boatlengths. Skybird was quite late, starting several minutes behind.

Chased Rinn Duin, gaining significantly on starboard tack but not on port, even lost ground on port tack. Could have been pinching on port. Wind was southerly enough that the port tack course appeared to be not gaining us any ground, that may have made me sail the boat a bit to high. The second(?) port tack board saw us approaching the returning J/105 fleet flying spinnakers, my driving may have been distracted by their approach. Second port tack board was slower than the first. Was not driving well on port. Based upon a histogram of speeds during the beat, we were nearly half a knot faster on starboard tack.

Came into the weather mark about ten boatlengths back, just about as far behind as at the start. Rinn Duin had significant problems getting their spinnaker set and pulling properly. So much so that we were able to round the mark, gybe, set and catch them well before A"4" and most likely before Y"A", as well. Rinn Duin tried to climb up on to our wind by sailing a bit higher. So to do so such that we were able broad reach under spinnaker till about 300 yards from R"8". Only in the last section of the run did the wind move aft enough for Rinn Duin to be able to affect our wind. By then it was too late, we were already transitioning to the upcoming close reach to Spa Creek. Rolled out the genoa halfway. Doused the chute. Rounded the mark poorly, tight to wide, allowing Rinn Duin to try to get above us. Their slow transition, delayed too long(?), prevented them from posing any issue. We rounded ahead and stayed ahead, gaining well, so that we arrived at SC"1" some five boatlengths in the lead. Casey trimmed spin very nicely working well with Rick to move the boat, pass Rinn Duin and extend our lead.

Tried to stay above the moored boats in Spa Creek, but failed to do so. A large powerboat sitting between two mooring balls had the spot where I wished to tack, so ended up tacking too early. Same place as last race on 2022-06-29. Very poor place to tack, just at the downstream end of Yacht Haven Annapolis. Ended up having to sail two boards on starboard in Spa Creek to make the finish. Lost the race in having to make that second starboard board. Finished two boatlengths behind Rinn Duin and well ahead of Skybird.

Need to seriously consider footing off some in Spa Creek, passing through the mooring field and tacking later.
