Sails: Pandora mainsail and 169LP genoa and EP Sails spinnaker.
Event: 2024 Annapolis Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta
Course: 0.75nm, two laps, gate the the leeward end, windward and offset mark.
Perhaps the day can be summarized by:
- While a single board sailing close hauled on port tack, I was suprised three times by J/22's crossing our bow at less than three boat lengths ahead. No warning provided by genoa trimmer.
- On the last close hauled port tack board before the windward mark, I was suprised to hear that we had to tack to avoid Skybird when she was less than three boat lengths away. No prior warning when a decision could be made to duck or tack. As a result of the tack, we were unable to lay the mark.
- Leeward spinnaker take down turned into a windward take down and loss of a spinnaker sheet overboard.
- When approaching the downwind end of the course, we did not know if we were on the first or the second lap of the two lap course...did not end well.
- Ended up double handing the boat with two consigned to the rail.
- Most significantly, a mismatch of expectations, focus on sail to compete vs unfocused racing. Example: upon my releasing the windward sheet of a backwinded genoa near the end of a tack, strong objections that I was interfering in the jib trimmer's job and should (must?) not do so irrespective of the effect on our performance.
