Course:A2
Sails: Elliott/Pattison Sailmakers
169LP genoa and spinnaker, and Pandora main. Backstay at 3.
With coaching from Ray and Rick, started close-hauled, full speed, at the boat within 5 seconds of the gun. Had sailed away from the starting line, reversed course at 2:30 to go and hit the line beautifully. Started above all other PHRF boats, with the ANSS Tartan 245 below us.
On the beat out to the first mark, the ANSS Tartan 245, pulled ahead and sailed an angle closer to the wind than we did. We fell back and crossed their stern, tacking from starboard to port soon after their tack, in order to be above their line and out of their dirty air.
Sailed the port board all the way to the entrance to Back Creek. Ray noticed the leech of the genoa curling a bit in part of the sail and eased the leech line to eliminate the curl. Ray and Rick had determined that the right side of the course was favored and so we went right when we knew that a reasonable line was available. A line above Horn Point, and above Back Creek with the possibility of laying the windward mark.
After tacking back to starboard in the vicinity of G"1E" at Back Creek, we were able to cross the BC27 Problem Child. From Mark "A" til the windward mark, we encountered a number of wakes on the starboard bow, forcing us to sail a bit lower to maintain momentum. The lifts did not equal the effect of the wakes. Arrived at the windward mark, below the mark. Had to tack, as the wind and the distance was more than we could shoot. While on port tack, clearing the mark, the BC27 Problem Child was approaching rapidly. Maintained port tack long enough to ensure that the BC27 Problem Child would be able to round the mark without interference from us. How is it possible that we arrived at the weather mark ahead of a boat rated 131 vs our 231?
Rounded the mark and set the spinnaker. Sailed a line above and parallel to the BC27 Problem Child and well below the ANSS Tartan 245. Were able to maintain position on the BC27 Problem Child, for the most part, losing only a bit of ground.
Doused spinnaker at R"8" and headed for Spa Creek in company with the ANSS Tartan 245 which was about ten boatlengths ahead. At G"1SC", sailed quickly through the lee of the BC27 Problem Child, making sure to leave them mark room due to the overlap established at the threen boatlength circle.
Sailed through the mooring field, playing the shifts, making what distance we could to windward. In the end, we could not clear the end of the dock and had to tack from port to starboard. Passed very close ahead of the the BC27 Problem Child while on starboard tack.
Stayed on starboard a bit extra to ensure that no problem would arise on the last board to the finish. Correct to second place over both the BC27 Problem Child and the ANSS Tartan 245. First time that we have finished ahead of the BC27 Problem Child on corrected time. Finished 25 second behind BC27 Problem Child. Finished a 65 second behind the last two Sonars, which started five minutes ahead of the PHRF fleet. Nearly a ten minute spread between the first Sonar to finish and the last to do so.
Finished fourteen minutes ahead of Rinn Duin who finished 23 seconds ahead of Ronin. A marked improvement over last week's results.
Have no explanation why we are so much faster than earlier than earlier this season. Perhaps its the crew. Perhaps its the Trinidad XSR keeping our bottom clean while others are fouled. Perhaps both. No idea. No explanation.
