Set up early for the start with luffing sails about a boat length behind and a boat length to the side of the committee boat. Sheeted at ten seconds to the gun. Good start. Our only competitor for this race, the Annapolis Sailing School Tartan 245 , PHRF rating 177 vs our 231, arrived early at the line and sailed toward the pin. They started some eight boat lengths below us.

Sailed out on starboard tack towards the first mark, "A", well above the competition, the Tartan 245, and matching them on boat speed. Expect that the Annapolis Sailing School uses the Wednesday Night Races to provide context and immediately verifable, comparative, results due to changes in sail and boat trim as part of their teaching program. Teaching being the Annapolis Sailing School's first priority, doing well in the race is a distant secondary consideration.

Continued on starboard tack till we past under four boats from the ORC 1 fleet, being momentarily blanketed by their spinnakers. Took the lane that appeared after the fourth ORC 1 boat to tack to port and gain a position to windard of the first mark, "A". The Tartan 245 followed us to the right side of the course. Held port tack will safely above mark "A". The tide had turned from slack to flood at 1700. Tacked back to starboard, set up to cross the Tartan 245 by about two boat lengths. Instead the Tartan tacked with us. We sailed in company, overlapped, to mark "A".

Left mark "A" to port, gybed, and proceeded to setting the spinnaker. Slow manuever. The Tartan 245 was slow as well, but they finished setting their asymmetric kite well before we were done. Quite soon after getting the kite sorted, Rick mentioned that we have to leave G"5" to port. Gybed and hard dive to starboard to get to the mark and leave it to port. Had been set up to pass well to port of G"5", leaving the mark to starboard. Still ahead of the Tartan 245.

Led the Tartan 245 to R"8". At the mark rounding the Tartan 245 slipped in above us and overtook us. The Tartan 245 held the lead the rest of the race, maintaining a lead of about three boat lengths to G"1SC" before extending the lead in the creek to 80 seconds. Our corrected time was 164 seconds ahead of the Tartan 245...indicating a total correction of 324 seconds...over five minutes.

When setting up for the alley to the slip, lost engine power. Symptoms of a fuel starvation problem.
