Sails: Elliott/Pattison Sailmakers 169LP genoa and spinnaker, and Pandora main. Backstay at 3.

Reaching start at the boat about five to ten seconds late. Started above the Annapolis Sailing School Tartan 245 . They switched boats...had been a white hull boat with sail number 5, tonight it was a green hull boat with sail number 5. Only three people aboard. Looked like they were out to race, not to teach.

Made the windward mark "A" in a single board that became a tighter reach, ending fully close hauled at the mark. Arrived at the mark in close company with the Tartan. Course back to G"5" was a beam reach, tight to spinnaker. Decided to forego the kite. The Tartan set and sailed high...seemingly much too high. Never drove down to the mark. Called the race committee on the radio to verify that the course was D3. Committee confirmed. Tartan sailed on towards R"8". Radio not on?

Rounded G"5" very closely...too much so...needless risk and headed back to "A". Its the course that they Etchells used to sail quite often. Some time after we turned for "A", the Tartan called the committee to enquire about the course, stating that the boards showed D1. Indeed, they had shown D1 but not for our start. Committee had announced the change in course well in advance of our start.

Tartan finally realized their error and turned back. Don't know if they rounded G"5" properly or just reversed course to "A". Does not matter.

After rounding "A" for the second time, decided to forego the spinnaker again, as we had a dominant lead and did not need to risk the possible errors that might occur with the number of inexperienced folks o the boat.

After rounding R"8", the wind began very erratic. Had to sail all the way to the Academy seawall, ducking a couple boats in the process. Headed back across the creek on starboard, all the way past several moored boats to the area northeast of SSA. Tacked and had to duck another couple boats on starboard, again sailed to the seawall, just outside the mooring field this time. Tacked across the creek, had to tack to avoid a J/30 due to their approach on starboard and a moored boat preventing a duck. Another tack and sailed through the mooring field to the end of the field. At this time, the Tartan had woken up and they sailed very well, just starting on our board as we left upon arriving at the Eastport side of Spa Creek, upstream of the ChartHouse. Tacked again, and sailed to the finish, finally.

Finished about 170 seconds ahead of the Tartan, 6.4 minutes on corrected time.
