169LP genoa and spinnaker, and Pandora main. Backstay at 3.
Used Need entry for Velocitek for the second time. Got away from the dock about 1800...busy at the line while maneuvering to get the boat and pin ends entered. Not pleased with the delay leaving the dock. Started with Rinn Duin a bit below us. Tartan separated from the Albergs, started on port. All three boats close together. Had to be careful not to fall down onto Rinn Duin. The Tartan tacked in front of us and came out of the tack slowly. Had to be careful not to get too close to their stern.
Moving very well on the first leg with a single reef. Hitting 5.7kts upwind. Main used only for steering. All power coming from the genoa.
Poor tack to port. My fault. Not a good leg on port. Trouble settling down, but in my driving and folks on the boat. Nonetheless, stayed with the Tartan, perhaps ten boatlengths behind. Some eight boatlengths ahead of Rinn Duin. Held port nearly to the shallows off Bembe Beach. Three more tacks required to reach Mark "D". Rounded behind the Tartan having gained from ground on her and well ahead for Rinn Duin. Average speed for all five upwind legs vary from 5.3 to 5.5 for the final leg sailed a bit fat.
Shook out the reef after rounding the windward mark "D". Decided not to fly spinnaker, given the wind strength, the number of people aboard constricting activity, and our speed relative to the Tartan. Sailed wing-on-wing for a portion of the downwind, noticeably faster, half a knot(?). On the downwind, the Tartan did pull away by sailing a hotter angle and having to gybe to make the mark. Keep pace with the J/80 Riot, flying aymmetrical spinnaker, for a portion of the downwind, while sailing wing-on-wing. Still the Tartan rounded R"8" with a lead a bit less than at the start of the downwind.
Fast reach to G"1SC" at an average of 5.8kts trailing the Tartan by about the same amount.
Able to out point the Tartan while passing the mooring field. Did not need to tack till approaching the docks near AYC. The Tartan had to tack earlier, failing to clear the moored boats.
Not able to hold off the Tartan to the finish; they go by us to leeward. Did not have good communications regarding the location and speed of the Tartan in the final leg. Finished eight seconds behind the Tartan, correcting to 206 seconds ahead.
GPX formatted formatted track. Estimated distance: 5.50nm, estimated average speed: 5.33kts, duration: 1:01
