Forestay:
- Replacement Winter/Spring 2020
- Forestay made up of XXX parts from masthead to stemhead:
  - 00' 2-1/4" extender plates (three holes) from Stay Extender cut in half. Required for two reasons: Hayn toggle at top of wire does not fit inside or outside of masthead fitting, and planned C S Johnson 1-15/16" link plate adapter (52-126) is not long enough. (see photos below.)
  - 35' 11" 7mm wire including Hayn Swage Eye Terminal for 7mm wire with 1/2" pin diameter.
  - 00' 8-7/16" Selden rigging screw at midpoint of adjustment.
  - 36' 9-11/16" Total Length of replacement headstay.
- 00' 1-7/16" Reduction of headstay length to reduce mast rake from 10" - 12" to 4" to 5".
- 9-3/4" pin center to pin center stay extender and two eye and jaw toggles matches sum of stay extender and two toggles listed below
- 4-1/4" pin center to pin center to third hole of C S Johnson Stay Extender plates and Hayn swage eye toggle
- 5-1/2" difference (total reduction in forestay length)
- Parts as found
- Forestay was made of up of four parts: link plate extenders, toggle, roller furler, and a double jaw toggle pinned to the foremast hole in the stemhead fitting.
  - 00' 05-5/8" from masthead pin to toggle pin C S Johnson Stay Extender / Link Plates with 1/2" pins, uniformly 1-1/8" per gap between openings.
  - 00' 01-15/16"pin center to pin center Alexander Roberts Co (ARCO) bronze eye & jaw fixed toggle with 1/2" pin ( FT-16-C ), despite being listed as 2-1/16" pin center to pin center.
  - 36' 01-3/8" Selden 200 S roller furler, from hole center in top swage fitting to hole center of the double jaw toggle at base of Selden rigging screw, as removed on 2020-03-04 without change. Foil sections as found:
    - 03' 3-3/8"+ distance from base of foil to top of the lowest foil section
    - 03' 5-5/8" distance from base of foil to top of the sail feeder
    - 11' 3-7/8" distance from base of foil to top of the first section above the feeder
    - 19' 2-3/8"+ distance from base of foil to top of the second section above the feeder
    - 27' 0-3/4"+ distance from base of foil to top of the third section above the feeder
    - 34' 9-3/4" distance from base of foil to top of the fourth/top section above the feeder
  - 00' 02-3/16" pin center to pin center Wilcox Crittenden bronze eye & jaw fixed toggle with 1/2" pin.
- 36' 11-1/8" Total Length
- Selden specifies 1'-4" (440mm) between the center of the forestay pin and the lowest inside point of the upper snap shackle. (see brochure)
- Selden specifies 1'-1" (330mm) between the center of the lower double jaw toggle pin and the highest inside point of the lower snap shackle. (see brochure)
- We need a foil of 36'-5" to accommodate the full size genoa with a luff of 34' not including webbing straps at head and foot.
- 35' 5-5/16" existing headstay 7mm wire: 35'-3" wire after cutting to remove Sta-Lok terminal. 2-5/16" wire cut off to remove Sta-Lok terminal.
- 00' 09-3/4" (24.7cm) = 5-5/8" extenders + 1-15/16" toggle + 2-3/16" toggle length of non-foil parts.
Uppers: 35' 2-7/8" Port, 35' 3-1/2" Starboard consisting of clevis pin, Hayn swage eye toggle, 1/4" wire, Sta-Lok stud terminal, Hayn turnbuckle with eye toggle (See 2020-04-26)
Forward Lowers: 19' 0-3/4" Port, 19' 1-3/8" Starboard consisting of clevis pin, Hayn swage marine eye, 7/32" wire, Sta-Lok stud terminal, Hayn turnbuckle with eye toggle (See 2020-04-26)
Aft Lowers: 19' 3-1/4" Port, 19' 3-5/8" Starboard consisting of clevis pin, Hayn swage marine eye, 7/32" wire, Sta-Lok stud terminal, Hayn turnbuckle with eye toggle (See 2020-04-26)
Backstay: 40' plus 2-1/4" Link extender plates (three holes). Sta-Lok fitting at masthead as the swaged marine eye would not fit. (see photos below.)

Dimensions

I: 35.9/36.0 feet, from the top of the jib halyard (highest?) sheave to the sheerline
J: 10'8", from headstay pin to front of forward face of the mast extrusion (shows on drawings as 10.5)
P: 31.0 feet, from highest hoist of mainsail luff or black band, if marked, to top of the boom. Per class rules.
E: 14.25 feet, from the aft face of the mast extrusion to the aftmost point of the mailsail foot, or black band, if marked. Per class rules.
ISP: 35.9 feet, from the top of the spinnaker halyard (highest?) sheave to the sheerline
JSP: 10.5 feet, length of spinnaker pole or from the forward end of the bowsprit (fully extended) to the forward face of the mast extrusion

Chainplates

Backing plates added during the winter of 2017. See 2017-01-22 and subsequent work.
Upper shrouds chainplates bolted to bulkhead at rear of v-berth.
Forward Lower shroud chainplates are bolted to hanging knees which reach from the shelf in the v-berth to the underside of the deck.
Aft Lower shrouds chainaplates are bolted to hanging knees inside the starboard hanging locker and the port head locker.
Backstay chainplate is bolted to a hanging knee in the aft lazeratte.

Genoa

Rail mounted genoa sheet track: 1-1/4" x 3/16" x 96". Aft end located 89.5" forward of starboard aft corner and 88,5" forward of port aft corner of the taffrail.
Deck mounted jib sheet track: 1-1/4" x 3/16" x 20"
Genoa halyard block attached to tang 4-3/4" below the masthead.
Genoa halyard keeper bottom of sheave 14-3/4" below the masthead.
Selden rigging screw extends 1-3/16" over 20 rotations of the rigging screw body and 1-9/16" over 20 rotations of the terminal end.

Gooseneck Track

1" wide
17-3/4" long
1/8" thick

Mainsail Sheave

Zephyrwerks 316L stainless steel bolt: 1/2" diameter x 4-1/8" thread to thread, 5-9/16" end to end. Original stainless steel bolt: 1/2" diameter x
Zephyrwerks compression tube: 5/8" outer diameter x 3-5/8" long. Original aluminum compression tube: 5/8" outer diameter x 3-5/8" long aluminum
Zephyrwerks acetal sheave: 6-3/16" diameter x 18/32" thick 5/8"- bronze sleeved pivot hole. Original tufnol sheave: 6-1/4" diameter x 17/32" thick, 21/32" pivot hole
slot: 3/4" wide x 6-15/16" long starting 6" below the top of the mast.
Aluminum plates on either side of the sheave are 3/32" thick.
24/32" or 3/4" combined thickness of sheave and plates.

Mainsail Track

7/8" wide

Masthead

9" from forestay hole center to backstay hole center.
3/8" wide slots for eyes at top of forestay and backstay.

Measurements

Mast Rake: about 10" aft from main halyard fully hoisted to deck 33' 10-1/2"

Spinnaker

Block at masthead is a Schaefer 404 sheave about 1-7/8" in diameter
Track appears to be Schaefer 1" x 6' Clear Anodized 40-66-C with endstops

Shrouds and Stays

36' 9-1/8" Forestay overall, 7mm wire
35' 2-7/8" Port Upper pin center to pin center, 1/4" wire
35' 3-1/2" Starboard Upper pin center to pin center, 1/4" wire
19' 0-3/4" Port Forward Lower pin center to pin center, 7/32" wire
19' 1-3/8" Starboard Forward Lower pin center to pin center, 7/32" wire

Stem fitting

8.5" is the distance from the center of the foremost hole in the stem fitting to the center of the aftmost of the four holes provided.

Turnbuckles

3/8" -- lowers, both forward and aft

Wire

150 feet of 1/4" 1x19 316 Stainless Steel Wire -- uppers 37', forestay 38', and backstay 39'5"
80 feet of 7/32" 1x19 316 Stainless Steel Wire -- lowers, both forward 20' and aft 20'

Tuning by stretch

Per John Vigor's blog entry Rig tuning the cheaper way , 1x19 stainless steel wire will stretch linearly with tension up to one-half the breaking load. A 1,980mm length of wire will stretch 1mm for each 5% of breaking strength loading. Stainless steel 316 1x19 wire rope of diameter 7/32" breaks at 5,350 pounds, 1/4" breaks at 6,900 pounds. Mark the wire with a pen when slack. Tension and re-measure. Elongation is directly proportional to tension.

Tuning Notes

Measured and marked using a blue Sharpie locations 157" aft from the forward end of the stem along the outside of the stanchions.
Taking up seven turns on the upper shrouds from fully loose, the end of the screw just sunk below the inside surface of the turnbuckle, brings the shrouds to just beginning to snug. Measuring with a tape measure tied to the main halyard shackle to the marked locations shows 35' 2-1/4" to port and 35' 3-1/4" to starboard.
Taking up two additional turns on starboard and easing two turns on port brings the measurement to 35' 2-3/8" both sides.
Thirteen turns on the upper shrouds brings the Loos gauge reading to 25 on each side.
24 turns? on forward lowers brings the shrouds to snug. 13 additional turns introduces about 3 to 4 halyard widths of mast pre-bend and a reading of 25 on the Loos gauge. Port forward lowers require eight extra turns ? to match the starboard forward lowers.
